How to Enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot for Modern Warfare 4
Step by step help for checking and enabling TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot so Modern Warfare 4 will let you play online on PC.
Modern Warfare 4 on PC will not let you play online unless TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are both enabled. If you are seeing an error, this guide covers how to check each setting and what to do if one is off. Exact menu names vary by motherboard, so treat the BIOS steps as a general guide.
Check TPM first
- Press Windows key + R, type tpm.msc and press Enter.
- If the window says the TPM is ready for use, look at the Specification Version on the right side. It needs to say 2.0.
- If you get a message that no compatible TPM is found, it is probably turned off in BIOS.
Check Secure Boot and BIOS mode
- Press Windows key + R, type msinfo32 and press Enter.
- Find "Secure Boot State." It should say On.
- Find "BIOS Mode." It should say UEFI, not Legacy.
If Secure Boot says Unsupported or Off, keep reading.
Turn on TPM in BIOS
Restart your PC and open BIOS or UEFI setup, usually with Delete or F2 during startup. Look in the security, advanced or CPU sections for one of these names:
- Intel systems: Intel PTT or Platform Trust Technology
- AMD systems: AMD fTPM or Firmware TPM
- Some boards simply say TPM Device or Security Device Support
Enable it, save and restart.
Turn on Secure Boot
Secure Boot needs UEFI mode and a GPT system disk. In BIOS, look for a Boot or Security section and the Secure Boot option. You may need to disable CSM (Compatibility Support Module) first. If Secure Boot is greyed out, you may need to set the key mode to Standard or load default keys.
If your disk is MBR
Secure Boot will not work with a legacy MBR disk. Windows includes a tool called mbr2gpt that can convert a system disk without wiping it, but back up your files first and read Microsoft's instructions carefully. A mistake here can leave Windows unable to boot.
After you are done
Restart into Windows and run msinfo32 again to confirm both settings. Then launch Modern Warfare 4. Activision also keeps an official TPM and Secure Boot support page if your board has an unusual layout.
If you are also planning to use third-party software with Modern Warfare 4, note that products like ours list HVCI, Core Isolation, TPM and Secure Boot as required settings, so getting these right is step one either way. Our article on what to check before buying covers the rest.
